Illuminate your kitchen – Light Fittings
In almost every room in the house we tend to use general and task light fittings. The kitchen is no different as we use both types there also.
What is task lighting you may ask!
Task lighting is when you use light to illuminate a certain section of the room you are using for that particular task (ie. Reading and a reading lamp). General lighting is pretty much what it says…
These days, these types of lighting are provided by overhead fixtures. The kitchen offers three types of fixtures.
Recessed Lights
These Light Fittings are hidden into the ceiling and serve a sense of space. These need less cleaning and they may be a clever idea if you have a modern contemporary kitchen.
You can be quite limited if your ceiling joists are not very deep as this can affect plumbing and other installations that occupy the same space.
Surface Lights
These Light Fittings can range from small fixtures that look like ‘mushrooms’ to larger fluorescent fixtures with multiple lighting tubes.
These fixtures light a larger area and can be easy to clean, but the dust build up can be more visible (than say) recessed light fittings. They can also break up the space of a room which can be a good or bad thing, depending which way you look at it.
Pendant Lights
These Light Fittings bring the light much closer to the area where you need more visibility. For that reason, they are ideal for task lighting.
These work well over a kitchen island. These will need cleaning regularly as they hang down and can be easily seen.
These have gained a lot of popularity over recent years for their efficiency and work well with recessed lighting.
